The Making & Historical Accuracy of “Free State Jones”

Historical Accuracy in “Free State of Jones”

Huffington Post recently released a short video interview with Gary Ross, the Director of the historical drama Free State of Jones. Ross explained how he strived to make the film as historically accurate and transparent as possible, which is unusual for what Hollywood tends to do. He spent years researching the Civil War and Reconstruction era; every source used, every piece of information, and if changed anything, what he changed and why. One of the reasons he wanted to make this film and make it as historically accurate as possible was because he didn’t like how films like Gone with the Wind and Birth of a Nation were the only few popular films that represent the era of Reconstruction and how “that record has not gone corrected”.
